Mateo started playing in the PSHL in the Summer of 2006.

Born Matthew Lorenzo Alvarez, he obtained his nickname from his grandparents and friends in his hometown of Bakersfield, CA. Mateo has been playing hockey since 2003, and moved to Tucson in 2006 with hopes of being on the University of Arizona football team. Before enrolling at Arizona in his sophomore year, Mateo played football at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA as a kicker. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, he decided to take his schooling to a drier climate.

Mateo is in his junior year at the UA.
